This Perfect Day
Yesterday was just a teaser - today could not have been more perfect.
Beautiful blue sky - crisp morning air.
Exquisite riding conditions!
It's Monday so there are hardly any cars on the road and I figured I wouldn't get a better day to repeat yesterday's passes and add a few extras.
There were quite a few bikes out and about including a few scooters. A 50cc group beeped and waved as they passed and I would have loved to know where they were headed and why.
I started with Susten and at 9am it was still a little cold in the shadows but the heated grips kept the chills away. I think I must have stopped 10 times and taken about 100 photos in that first half hour - then rode for the next 50km without taking a shot - it was that sort of day.
By lunchtime it was a gorgeous 24o and stayed like that for the rest of the day. Grimsel was the exact opposite of yesterday - clear and warm with the sun beaming off the snow. I had lunch in Gletsche and then tackled Nurfenen pass. I'd never been there before and the roads and scenery were just as spectacular as the others. I got to the base of Gotthard by 3pm and ignoring the signs to put me on the national road, I opted for the cobbled track. I kinda liked the idea of riding a road my parents had driven in 1962 in a Morris Minor. And what an experience it was!!!
Cobbled hairpins!! Honestly, you haven't ridden until you have conquered cobbled hairpin bends.
It was only 4pm when I got back to Andermatt and I couldn't handle the idea of calling it a day - so I turned around and rode to the top of Furka pass to watch the afternoon sun cast it's shadows across Grimsel. I stopped at the lookout and had a very delicious hot chocolate before heading back down the pass one last time.
