Last look at the Somme

Combles, Picardy, France
Wednesday, August 15, 2012

My throat is still screaming and I keep expecting it to turn into a cold with the runny nose and coughing up a lung, but it is still in my throat. The lozenges say max 6 a day but I've been getting through about 6 an hour.

Some well meaning friends have told me to gargle with salt water - ewwwwww. Tried it out of desperation but I think I'd rather swallow razor blades thanks. Did I mention that I'm not a very good patient?

Kate and I ventured out in the car as I wanted to see the Chipilly Horse that I hadn't seen the first time round. We had a mini (last) tour of the Somme and by the time I got back I needed a 4 hour lie down.

I was seriously doubting whether I would be capable of getting on Henry and riding 300km to England in the morning. I looked up all the different routes and finally settled on the Channel Tunnel as I'd never done it before.

Then I went back to bed.

This village deep in the valley of the Somme, was flattened in the 1914-1918 war and never rebuilt. The villagers chose to preserve this site and built their new homes across the road. From Kate Pegler, on Aug 16, 2012 at 07:05AM
