Ulysses does France

Labaroche, Alsace, France
Friday, August 10, 2012

Wally had to work so Chris and I set off about 11am to take a leisurely cruise to Labaroche and Gernot and Wally will follow later in the sidecar, taking the Autobahn.

Our first stop was Bitche where we had a coffee and then Chris went up to wander around the citadel. I took one look at the steep drive of cobbles and begged off.

We then got totally lost trying to get out of Bitche and kept backtracking to get our bearings. We eventually found the right road after a lot of mucking about and enjoyed the next 100kms winding our way through lovely country roads and villages. We stopped for a late lunch and by 3pm we were less than halfway to our destination.

A quick look at the map and we decided to jump on a major road to rack up some miles but we still didn't manage to get to the lodge before 7pm. Everyone else had arrived during the day  - about 10 riders on Beemers - and even Gernot and Wally had beaten us.

Dinner was served and then I retired to my room to freshen up. I was quite exhausted after 7 hours riding and needed a pain-killer for the first time in months. I had a quick lie down, intending to rejoin the others, but fell into a deep sleep and didn't wake up until morning.
